CYANOTYPE WORKSHOP

ACE member Colin Lowe presented a couple of workshops today on how to produce a cyanotype image the good old fashioned way.

This was the genuine article with all of the unpredictability and randomness that goes into creating an image that just feels so 'hand made' and original.

Processing images on a computer really doesn't provide the same 'feel' that you get from actually mixing the chemistry, applying the developer and exposing the image to the sun to achieve a result that is a one off and not easily repeatable.

Colin provided us with the history of the process and chemical reactions with ultraviolet light that go into forming the image.

It's a fascinating story and it's great that these processes are not being lost in a world where just about everything has been reduced to 1's and 0's.

The workshop proved to be extremely popular and I'm sure that members of the club who missed out as well as those who would like to experiment more with the process would like another session.

Thanks to Colin for his dedication to preserving traditional photographic processes and inspiring club members to get right out of their comfort zone and enjoy some very interesting alternatives.
