 NOONGAR BOODJAR
 Place Names Documentary

The Albany Entertainment Centre was packed to capacity for the premiere of the documentary put together by young Aboriginal film makers from Albany.

The background to the story was provided by local elders who collaborated with the younger members of the community to tell the history and stories of significant places around Albany and the Great Southern.

The project is based on a 5 year program that uses art and creativity to build on Professor Len Collard’s well known research of Noongar place names.

Elders and members of the film crew came on stage for a Q & A session to tell the story about their part in the project and what it meant to them personally.

In the process, a song was written especially for the event and was performed by the choir who sang the Kawaar song live following the presentation of the film.

Albany seems to have come alive lately with a number of successful community projects put together with the help of the Community Arts Network who are doing a fantastic job in promoting the arts and culture in the Great Southern.

Due to the outstanding success of this and other recent events I'm sure there will be more in the future.

The way so many people have come together to produce and share their culture, stories and frienship is inspiring to say the least and will no doubt continue to make a really important and positive contribution to our community.
